15 Dec 2018 Panaji, Goa Claymen was invited by Serendipity Arts Festival for the exhibition 'Matters of Hand: Craft, Design & Technique' curated by Rashmi Verma. This exhibition explores how the handmade in India is experienced through objects of utility ranging from recent innovations and artisanal expression to ubiquitous objects found in public and private spaces. The display features cleaning accessories and supplies - perhaps amongst some of the most inconsequential objects of our time - which have been crafted out of terracotta. Cleaning agents represent opposite of glory: they are readily available, cheap, and discarded without much thought. Same goes for terracotta as a material. But by using terracotta to create the objects and glorifying the way these objects are displayed, the collection aims to de-stabilize the way in which we assign value to certain materials. By transforming what is traditionally undervalued into that which is valued, this series comments on the descent of this formerly invaluable and highly coveted ceramic.
